There shouldn't be much difference with either approach. The main problem you've got is interference, don't route the cabe parallel to any electrical cable, if you must cross any other form of cable, do so at 90 degrees. Avoid at all costs running the cable near any flourescent lights, or low voltage power supplies.
I wasn't sure whether the RJ11 would be any improvement.
The cable is cheap enough to buy so I may just try it and see what happens. My current extension cable doesn't go anywhere near to what you have suggested above, but it is an old one.
