Angry Frustrated

Have tried about five times to set up a wireless network at home with a Netgear WGR614 v7 router. Installing via the tower the set up runs fine. On one laptop I install a usb adapter. The other one running Vista has it's own connectivity (It initially connected to a neighbour's network and to our own, albeit briefly). The thing is both laptops can recognise the network and say the signal strength is good. My son in law registered it on his palm held. Yet when one tries to connect no connection to the internet is available.
Initially the vista machine did connect but only very briefly. I have tried all sorts of things but to no avail. Even have one laptop in front of the router. Wired connection is no problem.
The only clue I am left with now is the laptops feel they have not got a correct IP address but shouldn't this have come across when I configured the network.
Checking on forums I have done the simple installation procedure ok but I must be missing something and constantly trying to set it up is becoming a depressing waste of time.
I'd be grateful for any ideas!
No doubt it will probably be something very simple

Re: Frustrated

Have you browsed the router pages themselves or just used the cd?

Re: Frustrated

I have the same router only version 6 and all i did was clone the Mac address without messing with any other settings and everything worked OK. I did change (wpa-psk) a few things later though.

Quote:
Open an Internet Explorer browser and type the router IP address which would be either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar and press Enter.

* The Login window will prompt for the router configuration username and password.
* The default username is “admin” and the default password is “password”
To avoid the smart wizard...

Quote:
1. Unplug the router power cord.
2. Turn off the computer.
3. Plug in the router to power.
4. Attach the computer to one of the router's LAN ports.
5. Turn on the computer, but do not open a browser.
6. Go to Start > Run, and type http://www.routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm. The browser opens and goes straight the the router's Basic Configuration page. (If the Basic Configuration page does not appear, repeat instructions from Step 1.)
7. Important: Click Apply, even if you don't make changes. Otherwise:
* The wireless features are not enabled.
* The settings are not saved.
* The SmartWizard runs next the next time you open a browser.

Re: Frustrated

You have to use the instructions as posted by 12noon, the wizzard does not work properly for some reason with VM connections.

Re: Frustrated

Thanx mates. I'll have to sort it later though as my daughter is doing college work most of the day on her laptop.
