Is it possible to turn off voice mail?

I don't want either free voice mail or the voice mail plus anymore as it causes more hassle than it's worth and I can just press a button on my landline phone and get them for free. Is it possible to disable it by dialling a number as I've just been on hold to CS for 45 minutes then got disconnected
