How do you get volume control to work on my telewest digital tv remote???

Does anyone know how to get the volume control to work on the remote for telewest digital tv? I have 2 boxes (and remotes) and the volume control doesn't work on any of them.
Does it just need programed or something?

Press vol + and mute wait till it flashes and then program the remote using the 4 digit codes, from the troubleshooting menu.

When I hold those 2 buttons nothing happens. I've just noticed the mute button doesn't work either.
Also, Couldn't find a troubleshooting menu, Where is this? Is it "daignostics"?
I'm not having much luck lol
Thanks
