Box came back to life!!!
Yesterday morning my setbox froze, so I unplugged it, waited a few minutes, plugged it back in and got 88.88 on the display. Tried a few things but got no joy so called CS who told me that the box was knackered and arranged for an engineer to call tomorrow, so I left the box unplugged.
When I got home today the darn thing was working - my twelve year oldhad decided to plug it back in to and, lo and behold, the darn thing is now working!
So, the question is - do I cancel the engineer or do I insist that he replaces the box?

I am not too sure on the times which CS is open, but i'd try and cancel if I were you - there is a £50 callout fee when there is no fault

don't scare the nice op, jtwn, not before pauly666 has welcomed him, anyway
if it really is working ok, then a call to cancel would be very helpful - but afaik a callout fee would only apply if it was adjudged an abuse of the T&C?

Where is your box located? Could it be overheating and the prolonged off period let it cool down properly?

Re: Box came back to life!!!
Thanks for the quick answers guys.
The blinkin' thing froze again and is not playing nice - won't do anything except say PACE & then TUNE and then won't move off TUNE. Have tried holding the down button (as told to by CS this morning) but nothing has happened so have switched the box off.
SMH - the box is in a TV unit, which is open front and back and the box has a 5 inch gap above it & 3 inches each side. It doesn't get too warm - the box I had before for the previous 3 1/2 years used to get so hot I'd turn it off night as I was worried about a fire hazzard, but this box seems to run much cooler.
Twelve year old monster has confessed that the box didn't just back on as easily as he said. Apparently it took several tries - mostly coming up with the 88.88 message and once with ERR1. I think I shall just have to wait for the engineer - this box was new in August and it took nearly two weeks before i could get my channels due to a problem with the system. The thought of spending the next two weeks with two teenagers on holiday + no TV is enough to make me think seriously about leaving home!

Re: Box came back to life!!!
Your box has had it, no doubt horrendous pre and post errors, snr at about 26dbmv. If a box goes to 8888 once it'll do it again. If you hit 'page up, page down and then the blue button' tell us what it says.

Re: Box came back to life!!!
As batfink has said the box has had it . The box will have bad pre and post errors on it or it will not lock onto the network Ring ntl and tell them it has 8888 on the front this will help the engineer if they put this on his notes .

Thnaks for all your comments.
The engineer has just been - I am now the proud possessor of a shiny new Samsung box, so hopefully things will be OK now.
