help with spampal

Hi all, i've been getting waaaaay to much spam these last few days so decided to do something about it ( spampal )
I've installed it and followed the config instructions as far as i could, it's asking me to change incoming mail server settings but i can't. Does anyone know about spampal that could help.

TIA ...................... also, anything else i should know

Re: help with spampal

what mail client are you using?

don't use spampal personally as it's all going via gmail at the moment and being forwaded from there to a 'safe' address.

But have used it in the past

Re: help with spampal

change your account setting in OE so the incoming mail point at 127.0.0.1 on port 1110, (or the port spampal tells you to use) You can find these setings for port on the advanced tab of the account properties page.

A good walk through is a t http://www.spampal.org/docs.html

Spampal downlaods the mail to itself and then acts as a local mail server. If you have a lot of incoming a 'cleaner' solution would be mailwasher which checks mail on the server and can clean automatically or manually 'before' you downlaod using your mail client, saving your bandwidth

Re: help with spampal

Spampal is an email proxy:

Mail client --get email--> Spampal --get email--> Mail server
Mail server --send email--> Spampal --assess, mark and send email-- > Mail client

Your mailserver is now localhost (not pop.ntlworld.com). Your username is now your username + @pop.ntlworld.com

greencreeper ---> greencreeper@pop.ntlworld.com

I think that's it. SMTP doesn't work - or it didn't the last time I tried it.

If you use a firewall that quarantines attachments (e.g. ZA Pro), then you can disable the virus rules in the RegEx filter by putting a hash at the start of the line: B_INCLUDE_LIST filters_virus.dat

Right-click the brolly in the system tray
Choose Options
Plugins - choose RegExFilter
Click Properties
Filter rules will appear

I also added these rules (after the B_INCLUDE statements):

Code:
#ZA Pro attachments
=LINE: 500.0 {\b(name=)\"?[\w[:punct:]]*\.zl(([0-9]*)|(q?))?\"?} [QUARANTINED ATTACHMENT]
#Few rules that might deal with cleaned nasties
=LINE: 500.0 {\b(name=)\"?DELETEDO\.TXT\"?} [CLEANED ATTACHMENT #1]
LINE: 150.0 {\b(name=)\"?[\w[:punct:]]*\.txt\"?} [TXT ATTACHMENT - CLEANED VIRUS?]
#Zip files might be dodgy (latest versions of ZA Pro quarantine zip files so
#this rule might not be necessary
LINE: 100.0 {\b(name=)\"?[\w[:punct:]]*\.zip\"?} [ZIP ATTACHMENT - VIRUS?]

#JANET is safe
RECEIVED: -200 {.ac.uk} [UK ACADEMIC DOMAIN]

#Rule to deal with emails not addressed to me
@ANY-RECIPIENT: {(.*@ntlworld\.com)}
#This is all on one line but split up for reading on CF
-ANY-RECIPIENT: 200.0
{(draftspasmwarp@ntlworld\.com|dwarfinleopardskin@ntlworld\.com)}
[TO NTL & BCC'D ME]

#A flawed rule to deal with multiple NTL recipients
ANY-RECIPIENT: 200.0 {(.*@ntlworld\.com){2,}} [MULTIPLE NTL RECIPIENTS]

#Emails sent to my spam email address are given extra points
ANY-RECIPIENT: 200.0 {draftspasmwarp@ntlworld\.com} [SENT TO SPAMTRAP]
Finally, you can create extra DNSBL definitions:

Right-click the brolly in the system tray
Choose Options
Click Advanced so the tree expands
Select Extra DNSBL Definitions
Click the Extra DNSBL Definitions button
Add the attached text (cut and paste - remove anything already there)
Save the file

In the Options tree, find Spam Detection and click it to expand it
Expand Blacklists
Select Public Blacklists
Put a tick in Untrusted Countries at the bottom
In the Options tree, select Countries and remove all ticks

I think that's it but shout if you need help or are lost

If Spampal is playing up, there's the log file C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\SpamPal\log.txt You might have to enable it and set the logging level in Options though.

Thanks for trying mate, but due to a forced system restore due to this thread I no longer have SpamPal installed, back to the drawing board. Any suggestions for another free spam blocker ??

I think Spampal is the best out there, and it's free. I have tried Mailwasher and I just don't rate it. If nothing else, it's irresponsible to provide a mail bouncing feature.
