British Justice and Sentences

This has really rattled my page

Hull funeral director imprisoned for 20 years for not burying a number of corpses
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...rt-bush-jailed

Now this is an horrendous crime which would have caused massive distress to a lot of people who he would have also defrauded but that is all and he got 20 years

My issue is when I do searches for averages of other crimes

"The average sentence for rape in the UK varies by region and year, but generally falls between 5 and 10 years in custody, with a typical range of 4 to 19 years depending on the specific circumstances of the offense"

"The average custodial sentence for the rape of a child under 13 in England and Wales has risen significantly, reaching 13 years and 8 months in 2025, up from 8 years and 9 months in 2010"

Ok firstly I do not get why the child rate figures are lower than the rate of an adult figures but both are less than this funeral director got

Now Manslaughter

"The average custodial sentence for manslaughter in the UK is approximately 8.8 years, a figure that nearly doubled from 5.4 years between 2007 and 2017. While the maximum penalty is life imprisonment and the minimum can be a community order, most cases result in fixed-term sentences typically ranging from 2 to 10 years. "

again lower than both rapes and substantially lower than what this funeral director got

It makes absolutely no sense to me. How can fraud and not burying the dead carry a higher sentence to raping a child? how messed up is that

Speechmaked sentences are quotes from AI search

Think its more that he prevented lawful burial multiple times, its far more than your average fraud case, personally I judge the case on its merits and don't compare them to other unrelated cases, like I keep saying there is an unduly lenient sentence panel the public can appeal to if they feel that strongly, personally in this case I feel the pos got what he deserved

sorry but that totally misses the point. I am not arguing his sentence is to excessive what am arguing is if you can get 20 years for fraud and not burying a number bodies then a child rapist should never again see the light of day (think this anyway) it is the imbalance

I agree, but I think we get odd cases like this where the funeral director is facing multiple stacked charges? So 20 years is the result of multiple sentences, whereas the rapist in your scenario is one sentence.

That said, I would want higher than 13 years there anyway. Murder, violence and offences against children should get much longer than most other crimes.

I don’t think there’s an imbalance here. I think you’re looking at it upside down and making out that this man’s offending was considerably less serious than it actually was. This involved at least 30 deceased individuals going unburied and 37 further offences on top of that, including giving out the wrong ashes to grieving relatives. He has 67 offences in this one sentence covering a period of 12 years. The living victims of his offending number well over the 80 living relatives who were at court to talk about it this week.

It’s unwise to play off one person’s trauma against another, especially where a crime like rape is concerned. I will simply say that the magnitude of this man’s offending and the trauma he has caused is on an industrial scale and there is no sensible way you can sit this side by side with a different offence and attempt to judge whether this was too harsh or that was too lenient.
