It should be more about intent, rather than outcome.
He ended up nearer the ball. It's not as if the other player had the ball and he charged in. At the moment the Southampton player went for the ball with his foot, the Man Utd player wasn't there or in the line of where his foot was going. The Southampton player was standing upright on his left leg at the point of contact. It was the Man Utd player moving forward into him. If the Man Utd player had stuck his leg out towards the ball, and then the Southampton player moved, that would be a different matter.

A classic example is nobody is near a defender and they decide to clear the ball with an overhead kick. At that point in time, no danger to anyone, but an attacking player runs up and gets in the way. It's not as the normal everyday walking or driving a car, where you're expected to anticipate what others might do, and let them pass.
Too many instances where if you look at things in slow motion, there couldn't have been intent, even if they wanted to.
