The most obvious reason to accept a short term contract (over none) is that taking a hit later rather than now is an improved financial outcome. AFAIK any initial interest shown in buying the BT Sport channels came to nothing. Perhaps they intend to make it (more?) profitable by cutting out the middleman and keeping all the subs* by streaming??

* They would have to pay a commission to VM if they put this on VM. Perhaps this is what any dispute is about. Wasn't it Disney + who wouldn't join because VM wanted too big a cut?
