BT and Sky 'at loggerheads over Premier League wholesale rights'

Sky wants to acquire BT's live Premier League rights on a wholesale basis.

BT is facing a tough decision over whether or not to sell Sky the wholesale rights to its live Premier League football matches.

The telecoms giant has won the rights to screen 38 games per season from 2013/14 to 2015/16 in a deal worth £738 million and will show the fixtures on its soon-to-launch BT Sport service. Among BT's package of live matches - which represents a quarter of the clashes to be televised each season - is the opening game of the new Premier League campaign.

BT has already revealed that it will sell the sporting content directly to Sky customers, but the satellite broadcaster is understood to be keen on acquiring the wholesale rights so it can offer the whole season to Sky subscribers at its own prices.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, a source close to talks between the rival broadcasters explained: "The main issue has been over wholesale rights.

"BT does not want to give them to Sky since it wants to use BT Sport to lock in two million of its customers who watch Sky on BT broadband."

British broadcaster Sky — a company controlled by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. — has reportedly refused to air ads for a competing service on its channels. The accusation comes from telecoms giant BT, which is making a big play for the UK sports TV market. Sky has enjoyed something of a monopoly on content and distribution in the UK over past decade. It has double the number of subscribers of its nearest competitor, and around 40 percent of UK households have at last one Sky box.

To combat Sky's dominance, BT is ramping up its sports coverage — traditionally Sky's strongest market. It paid £738 million (roughly $1.13 billion) to broadcast 38 Premiership soccer matches live, and also snapped up the rights to rugby, cricket, and women's tennis. BT has filed an official complaint with the UK's Office of Communications (OFCOM), saying it's the victim of "undue discrimination." It's not clear what grounds Sky gave for refusing to air the ads. Speaking with The Guardian, BT Retail managing director John Petter said "we are happy to take Sky's advertising but they seem afraid of taking ours," comparing Sky's decision to "a rottweiler running away from a newborn puppy."

With all eyes on the Manchester derby a brand new Premier League rivalry is kicking off behind the scenes between rival networks Sky Sports and BT.

BT bosses have accused BSkyB of being a like a ‘rottweiler running away from a newborn puppy’ after the long-standing network refused to air BT’s new advertising campaign.

The adverts are for BT’s new multi-million-pound network to promote its coverage of the Premier League and other sports beginning in the summer.

BT have now lodged an official complaint with regulators Ofcom claiming that BSkyB have shown ‘undue discrimination’ against them by refusing to run the campaign of adverts.

John Petter, managing director of consumer for BT Retail, told the Guardian: ‘We are happy to take Sky’s advertising but they seem afraid of taking ours. It’s like a rottweiler running away from a newborn puppy.’
BT spent £738million to take 38 top-flight games next season after the channel launches in July and will also air Premiership Rugby and European Rugby.

But a key part of their strategy of growth is to raise awareness of their new channel by advertising on Sky Sports channels.

The broadcast code states that 'a radio broadcaster must not unduly discriminate between advertisers that seek to have any commercial communication included in its licensed service.'
