They used to do that many years ago but it is my understanding that they haven't done that for a while now and if you want an "alternative" shub registering on your account then they will provide it for you and the new mac address will need to be registered. It doesn't matter whether it is a new shub3 or a new (as in from VM and not second hand) shub2.
The techs won't have any more stock of the shub2s that they can access however you may be able to get a refurb through the CEOs office. When the two techs came out previously did they swap the shub3 over and give you a new one? I don't understand why you are having issues in modem mode and using a proper router.
