Multiple numbers to one?

Has anyone had any experience with (or ideas for) setting up multiple numbers to point to the same destination number cheaply?

A friend of mine is looking at setting up 4 or 5 numbers with different local area codes but wants them all to terminate at the same (existing number).

I've worked out one way to do it with a VOIP account that would be pretty cheap but wondered if there were any recommendations for services designed for this rather than kludging it through a VOIP account which essentially means bouncing all calls through another gateway adding another possible point of failure.

Thanks!
