That is not an unusual result in a French presidential election though because of the round system. Macron is not
unusually unpopular for a French president. In fact, he is unusual in winning the first round despite being the sitting President.
He is not popular of course but French Presidents rarely are. The UK press seems to be trying to paint a story of a pro-EU president under siege but he isn't unpopular because of that, he is unpopular because of a package of economic reforms these papers would otherwise be supporting. The UK is seeing this via a prism that few in France are voting on.
