Prior to Monday 10 September, anyone buying a new passport that had up to nine months left to run on their existing passport could have this carried over onto the new passport.
Under new rules, the additional time left to run on your existing passport is not carried over.
They increased the passport cost as ID cards were to be issued at the same time. But then the ID cards were scrapped, but the price didn't go down.
