Virgin Media is just the brand name LG chose to continue to use under licence from the Virgin Group in the the UK and Eire. As discussed earlier, LG will also still have to pay TiVo/ROVI for elements of patented tech used in its Horizon software, similarly to Sky for software within its Sky+/Q and nearly all other PVR manufacturers which all use TiVo patents.
Liberty Global's software arm is an independent entity from Virgin Media. So there will be a payment from VM for its services. There are clear benefits to this - one being if you sell the software or ISP businesses, you know the true costs of running that business which we would be more opaque if you didn't agree a charge.

At the moment, both entities are indeed 100% owned by Liberty Global but next year, VM UK will only be 50% owned by Liberty Global, 50% Telefonica. The licencing fees will still continue then.
