It can be successful if the PCB is not compromised. (Charred or corroded) I remember a temperature controller (1/4 DIN) that had "fallen" in a vat of glucose.  The service engineer washed the bare PCBs in a bath of detergent and then Arklone and finally dried out in an low temperature oven. It worked afterwards.
