They might not get as far as prosecution, but they are making it progressively harder. The number of features that have been removed from successive generations of Audiovisual equipment shows the industry wants increasing amounts of control over content.

V+ had a function for those who wished to backup via SCART, gone in Tivo. Virtually all Freeview Recorders are HDD only, no DVD Writers built-in. And Recorders themselves aren't widely available anyway these days. Much less choice, from much smaller range of manufacturers.

Archiving in every medium ever has an expiration date, whether it be disk, tape, parchment, paper or stone.
