I've only heard it in Scotland (where I grew up), and have never heard it in any part of England where I've lived/worked (most of England).
It's one of colloquialisms that doesn't seem to travel from Scotland, like -
Greetin - crying
Wains - children
Winching - kissing
Ginger - pop / fizzy drinks
Piece - sandwich
Gallus - impressive/cheeky
