As you know, I stream and record only, never watch anything live.

I don't have an issue with people who prefer linear, I'm just puzzled as to why.

Although the reports on all this can be mixed, I am pretty sure that the trend is pointing to a steady increase in preference for streaming. I think this will become much more noticeable over the coming years.
