Vegans were excited to buy the new meatless roll but die-hard Greggs fans weren't sure how it would taste.

But clearly people wanted to try it for themselves as dozens of people said that their local branch had sold out of the treats.

They were furious that they didn't get to try the new sausage-less pastry.

Some hungry Greggs fans said they visited multiple shops in an attempt to try the new sausage-less roll but all of them were snapped up.

One lucky customer said her branch had been cleared out too - but she waited for staff to cook a fresh batch as she was so keen to try one.

Another said: "Greggs vegan sausage roll sold out in every shop in Cardiff.

"Lots of lost vegans stumbling around Queen St. Re stock tomorrow please!"

One added: "I went to 4 Greggs stores looking for a vegan sausage roll. Sold out in all of them."

A spokesman for Greggs said: "We’ve had an overwhelming response from customers wanting to try our new Vegan Sausage Roll. We’re working hard behind the scenes to get more product to shops as soon as we can."

The branch in Palmer Street, near London’s St James Park station, is one where the items sold out over lunchtime.

A worker in the store said: “They were very popular. They’ve been insanely popular.

“They’ve just gone. We had one tray of 80 and they’ve just gone.”

At another nearby branch, in Strutton Ground, 25-year-old Tyler Hanley was left disappointed when he missed out on a roll of his own.

“I went to get on to try but they’re not selling them at the moment, which is a shame.

“I’d like to try one,” said Mr Hanley, who works nearby the store as a political researcher.

A worker inside the shop said they were sold out.

Elsewhere, people reported a branch in Altrincham was running out of the snack while London’s Strand store and another in Lincoln were also said to have done so.

Reports on social media say branches around the country had sold out of the vegan 'designed in Newcastle' Quorn-filled sausage rolls by late lunchtime.

One customer, from Newcastle, said her branch sold out by midday, while ChronicleLive's court reporter informed us the Quayside Greggs also had none left by early afternoon.

We checked Greggs branches in Newcastle City Centre at around 2pm on Thursday, to find there were none left to be had. One staff member said that as far as they knew, the sausage rolls had sold out pretty much every where in town.
