There are very few checks and balances on judges. One of the papers this weekend (I forget which, I read so many of the darned things at work this morning
) ran a piece on which judges tend to get appealed against. In some cases, there are serving judges in the UK who of their last 60-70 cases have later seen 30-40 of them overturned on appeal, usually when the defence demonstrates they misled the jury.
