Re: Jury recommends death penalty for Wash. sniper

You said you'd hate to be executed, ok so would most people, but there's worse things than death you know.
Well, I'm not really interested in whatever is worse than death. There is a certain satisfaction that I get when someone like that gets executed. The punishment fits the crime perfectly, for me, in my opinion. That is what counts if I'm on the jury bench: my opinion. I want that option available to me, because I know if I'm a family member of a victim, that is what I would want and nothing more. The "worse than death" sentence isn't really appealing to me.

I was expressing the history of capital punishment as a detterant, nowadays it's the loss of life that deters, in the past, it was also the "going to hell" bit that detered.
We can argue for years about this. Is capital punishment a deterrant? That really depends. Scandinavia has low homicide rate and there are no capital punishment laws. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia too has low homicide rates and there are public executions. I do believe that capital punishment acts as a deterrent at least in a small fasion. How big, I don't know.

The Jury have recommended the death sentence, the families of the victims should now have the option to commute the sentence to life imprisonment or to let the death sentence stand.
Well, the legal system does not allow for that. Regardless, I do not want the families to have such an over powering ruling vote over the jury and judge. As a member of my community, I would want the death penalty in this case. That is why the jury is from the community, and those affected by the crime do not serve on the panel.
