I cant help but feel your attitude would change if Joe Bloggs over the road from you had the same brainwave and tried a little DIY on his line resulting in crap performance for yourself. Go buy yourself 5meters of co-axial cable from Maplin. That should do it.
And if Joe Bloggs lived over the road from me, I would kick up such a fuss, NTL would go out and rewire the whole lot for him even if he did have a little whinge about the workmanship of the installation.
