I also got fed up with ZoneAlarm reducing my speed to around 2.3Mbps. Uninstalled it and now get around 3.81Mbps.

I now use the Windows firewall, which offers pretty good security and passed all the 'Sheilds Up' tests. Just run Adaware and/or SpyBot search&destroy once a week to be safe.
