I think you need to shut down the X server with control alt backspace & then login to a text only session.

I'm a noob at linux as well & I'd recommend PCLinuxOS. Get it here

Very friendly & helpful community, good hardware support, you might not even need to download nVidia drivers as there is an iso specifically for those cards.
