I've read that Pace boxes aren't supposed to handle more than 1mb, but here are my figures after the upgrade from 2mb that happened the other day. (I've had a couple of Pace boxes and they've both have been able to handle the upgrades from 512 > 1mb > 2mb, although the TV picture sometimes blacks for a second when downloading heavily)

In theory there should be no difference between a STB and a modem, however I have heard many reports of modems being superior. However, the flt in the ointment in this case is that STB's seem to be getting upgraded before modems, so you may have to wait a day or 2 longer. I would say go with the modem though.
On a side-note when I had a Samsung STB I found the picture a LOT better than the pace, so it'd be worth getting a new STB if poss anyway.
