I use 98SE a lot and if I change the network configuration at all then it resorts to the Windows disk - or at least my copy of it that's on the HDD.

I don't know for certain but I guess it'll do this even if you use a USB/Ethernet adaptor.

Why not get one of the many Windows98 'reinstall' disks that are on eBay.
