Sony regard both the PES series and the GTA series as important titles for the European market, particularly the UK. They allowed the WE6FE incarnation of PES2.5 to be released on the GC in Japan, but not the UK, as it was too important a title to the UK. What makes you so sure that they're not doing the same thing with GTA, this time in the US?

Isn't it possible that Amazon and co assumed since it was getting a US release, that it was also getting released in Europe, and so started taking pre-orders? But they've since been told that it won't get a UK release? At the very very least, Sony may have forced them to hold back any announcements till after Xmas, and the retailers have been told that the game does not yet have a planned release date, and may never have.

Part of me suspects that it'll be out sometime next year. However, I have a feeling that Sony may only have changed part of its exclusivity deal, covering the US, but will not allow it to be released in the UK. Just a hunch.
