an important addition to the many DNS threads floating around

i've read a few threads that cover the problems people are experiencing with DNS services..

but, i've not seen the fact mentioned that windows XP has it's own DNS service that cache's UNsuccessful lookups by default.

the issue can be lessened by disabling the negative caching.. instructions and registry patches here: http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/dns_cache.htm

the registry patch applies to XP and 2000

also, remember to flush the DNS cache just before you change the registry by running "ipconfig /flushdns" from a command prompt.

note: this won't fix the broken DNS servers .. but it should get you connecting as soon as they do work... instead of you being sat there hitting refresh fruitlessly

hope this helps some of you
