Simple network problem?

Hey, i'll go straight to the problem....

okay, I currently have 2 computers connected to an adhoc wireless network (this runs okay, no problems), and I have recently bought a laptop and wish to add this to the network... but...
okay, the laptop doesnt (yet) have any wireless network ability, but it mainly sits within 60cm from my 2nd computer and i'm guessing it would be possible for me to connect the laptop to this computer by ethernet.
My ICS hosting computer is far far away downstairs, and the 2nd PC & laptop is in my room. I have no experience with direct ethernet networks, I figured i'd just have to connect the CAT5 wire directly from each system and the network would be instantly active (like my wireless was, and with experience , if you could call it that, of directly plugging the wire from my broadband box to my PC) but it seems this isn't that simple.
Both systems show "A network cable is unplugged" for the ethernet connections and setting up a new network on the laptop and 2nd computer doesnt do anything, except deleting my wireless network setting on my 2nd PC.
My 2nd PC won't let me bridge connections because it says I must have 2 LAN or internet connections not being used by ICS.

...ALSO...

I have a random Linksys WAP11 (wireless access point) thats currently not in use, could this help my situation in anyway? And if so how?

PS: i'm really trying to keep this wireless network AdHoc untill i buy a WFi router and mini PCI card for the laptop.

Cheers and Thanks in advance,
Wez
