Rather than give NTL £x a month ad-infinitum.. why not.. just buy a router and see how it goes. Make sure the router has a QOS option but dont worry about using it at this stage - Get some recommendations on the choice of router though, it'll save work later on . (QOS is just a feature so that certain types of traffice can have priority over others)

If that doesnt work out pay/bribe someone that knows a bit about networks to enable the QOS feature so his gaming stuff gets priority.

If that doesn't work, then get 2nd NTL line and optionally sell router on ebay.
