Thanks for trying mate, but here is a more techy answer i got elsewhere which seems to suggest as you say 1080i is not quite as good depending on the circumstances.
As with most things, it depends.

1080i has a resolution of 1920x1080, while 720p is 1280x720. But 720p has double the frame-rate.
If we assume that you have a screen capable of displaying 1920x1080 without downscaling, 1080i will be vastly superior for a cinema movie (which was shot at only 24fps, and thus gains nothing from the added frame rate anyway). For something fast-moving, like a live sports broadcast, the extra frame-rate of 720p may be better because it makes for smoother motion.
Of course, if your display is only capable of 1280x720 (or 1366x768 or, worse still, 1024x768) the extra resolution you get from 1080i will be wasted, but the extra frame rate of 720p isn't, so 720p will be better.
It also depends how good your deinterlacing circuitry is. If it doesn't support film-mode detection (or the source isn't actually shot on film anyway) then 1080i will be downscaled to 1920x512 progressive, which is much less impressive than 1920x1080.
