The modems that Paul is referring to aren't chipped in any way, they tend to just be modems that people have left over from when they left ntl.

There are as far as I'm aware no chipped modems as chipping is pointless, to steal service you'd still need to do some work at home, which is trivially easy. The only use for chipping modems is on Motorola modems where they are comprehsively reprogrammed with new firmware. The Ambits that ntl supply are nowhere near as hacked because there's no need.

Apart from the 250s which are somewhat more robust making the changes needed to the modem to steal service takes 5 minutes and a couple of quid of gear from Maplin's anyway.
