Originally some customers did own their own modems, but this is now the exception rather than the norm. Occasionally one of these genuine private modems are sold, but that will be rare. Most modems you see on sites such as ebay will not be the sellers property and cannot be legally connected to the cable network.
Cable Forum will not permit discussion of any methods that could allow customers to acquire services that they are not paying for.

Just to say that when I left NTL they didn't want the modem back, same with all my friends houses I think, if they simply provided a return evelope they could stop a supply of new modem that presumably also get hacked. Anyway I suppose its technically still not my property and i didn't take it from the house but still they are giving crooks the opportunity if this is their standard practice.
