I can get 8 mb on a Tjet so doubt the problem is your modem, unless of course it is broken.
Make sure Ntl don't con you into giving them ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£50.00 for a new 250 modem when all the time the problem is likely to be their oversubscribed network and abysmal peering arrangements.
