Inquests - why waste time?

An example of what we hear so often reported as news:
Quote:
The inquest into the death of a convicted rapist who was believed to have killed a Polish care worker has been opened and adjourned.
Ignoring the details of this specific case, why do they do this? (i.e. open and adjourned) Is it just procedural? Because if it is, why is it news?

Then looking at this specific case, for example - looks like an open-and-shut case. They've got all the evidence - what are they waiting for?
