Many routers only have a 10mbps ethernet port for the WAN connection, don't know if that's the case for your netgear above. Simply put if the WAN port is a similar speed as the internet connection, things can struggle, especially if the WAN port autosensing of the connection, duplex / half duplex goes awry.
In terms of alternatives, the Linkysys WRT54G or WRT54GS are popular, but I'm sure there are reliable Netgear models out there too.
