Travellers/gypsies/pikeys/**** - is there a meaningful distinction?

All I've ever seen is dirty people in clean caravans with way-too-expensive and/or should-be-written-off vehicles camping on land that isn't theirs (or anyone else's) to camp on. And if/when they leave, the place looks like landfill. I don't care what you want to call them - I know them by what they do.

So councils can keep trying to evict them. With the police being limp-wristed, spineless good-for-nothings in cases like this, this verdict doesn't change anything, unfortunately.
The kind of people that the media refer to as gypsies *are* what I would call Pikies. True gypsies (seemingly a dying breed) do try and live in harmony with their neighbours.

I am not defending Pikies, I hate them. I just don't like the fact that the media (and therefore most of the population, including, apparently, nearly everyone who has posted in this thread) don't draw a distinction between the two.
