I would get a router - can cost as little as £20.
You don't have to install software on the main pc (or use window's connection sharing thingy), and the main PC doesn't have to be turned on for the 2nd PC to be able to access the internet.

I would always use a router, even if I only had one PC connected. The router is a firewall by definition, and so means one less thing to get wrong / install on the PC. Also then if you want to connect another PC (permanently or temporarily), is as easy as another cable into the router.
