Firewire and Camcorder not dected

Anybody know what might be happening here?

I have just bought a JVC GR-D240 camcorder.

manual here http://www.jvc.co.uk/files/instructi...t1380-001a.pdf

Basically I can't get Windows Xp to detect the camera via firewire at all.

I've tried the following.

Seeing if Firewire is enabled in BIOS.
Looking for a BIOS update
Windows update
Looking for drivers for the camera
Reading the manual but it's very vague on Firewire
Checking the web to see if anyone has managed this and they have, so it does work....
I've bought a new Belkin shielded cable so feel that this should not be the problem.
Checked that the Firewire is listed and appears to be working correctly in Device Manager. There are no ! marks anywhere.
Its a Texas Instruments firewire (Texas Instruments TSB82AA2 1394B OHCI 1.1+ Compliant Link-Layer Controller) on a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI motherboard. NVidia chipset with latest drivers on everything that I can think of.
I've tried repeatedly banging it against a wall.
I've tried plugging the leads in, in the order suggested in the manual.
I've tried on battery and on mains
I've made sure all firewalls are off.
I've stopped the antivirus realtime protection.
The cable is 6-4 with the 4 being on the camera.I've removed all three of my last remaining hairs.
I've checked that the wire from the back of the firewire socket on the motherboard is plugged correctly into the motherboard. Its a "riser" type that occupies where a PCI card would go but uses a wire to plug into the motherboard.
I've looked through MS knowledge base for clues
I've done a google search
I've looked through JVC website for hints.

Anybody got any gems of advice?
