I wouldn't have thought there was any need for a reason as to why he did it - it could be any number of things. He could have been swept up in the 'emotion' of it all (for want of a better word), or he actually be a radical extremist (although I doubt that due to the fact that he
has apologised). It might just be that, yep, he's a bit of a numpty.
Having said all of that, I think it takes some guts to admit that you might have acted somewhat foolishly, so fair play to him. Doesn't necessarily make what he did right, but at least he's gone some way to make amends.
