That's the usual setup, patch for router to PC or crossover for PC to PC connections. The OP was stating a crossover when directly connecting the two PCs without a router though.
Think we need to know more about your setups on the PCs, how did you setup the file sharing, are there any files in the folders, what have you named the computers on the network, what type of account are you running on both PCs.
