Definitely go for an PCI card. USB uses general resources of your PC, i.e. processor, software etc, taking it away from other activities, like processing the internet stuff for display. You describe your PC as aging, that implies the processor memory etc will have limited spare capacity. Since a PCI card will have it's onboard stuff you won't nick that power for the wireless.
When you do eventually replace the PC, it probably wouldn't be wireless inbuilt (unlike laptops). Thus you'll still be able to swap the PCI card into the new PC, so it won't be a waste of cash.
