I'm going to apologise for using the word numpty, sorry, the word employee would have fitted in there just as well and not been derogetory in any way.
That said, if the OP knows that the router he buys needs to have an RJ45 port on it not an RJ11, we are a good way through the battle of making sure he gets out of the store with something that will do the job, not in a position of having to take it back and explain that he has been sold (or bought) the wrong one and he cannot plug the cable from his ISP into the router they sold, and we have been there with some previous visitor who were trying to network their home.
So what your shopping list from PC world should look like is
1) Network Interface Card (NIC) - also know as an Ethernet card
2) Linksys WRT54G or similar wirless router (suitable for attachment to a cable network RJ45 connection not a telephone network ADSL RJ11 connection)
3) A wireless NIC, or a wireless USB connector.
Those three parts, a screwdriver and not a great deal of courage will have you up and running in no time.
