IMHO real parents don't let their kids on the internet without some form of protection.

It may be as simple as 'net nanny' type software or even sitting with the child whilst they are on-line for the first few hours showing them the "do's and don'ts" like do use instant messenger to contact known friends, but don't meet new ones in person.

In my house, the kids PC is blocked from chatrooms, IRC etc. and the kids all know if they are caught in a chatroom / giving out personal data they don't go back on the computer at all.
I also cache every site they go to and flick through the URL's once in a while.
