OK it looks like a trip to Comet then (thanks Iain),for a Linksys 54gses.

If this is positioned close to the main PC,can I connect the router and PC with a cable (RJ45 ethernet) and just have a wireless network for the upstairs PC and laptop ?

Thanks everyone for the replies and Iv'e just noticed the times on the posts !! I couldn't have got a quicker response if I'd have phoned you !!
