An Attenuator lowers the signal on the line, too much signal can be as bad as not enough, if the engineer did not install an Attenuator, if he did his job correctly then you should not need one. If you have signal problems with your Modem then you may perhaps need one but leave it to NTL to work it out from what sort of signal you get at your end.
