How to position a modem in the cable sequence

Hi
I have NTL Broadband via a set top box namely the Samsung SMT 2100C

Currently my cabling is as follows:
Wall socket to set top box, white cable with screw ends like ariel cable.
RJ45 from set top box to Netgear Wireless Firewall Router WGT624.

Here is my question:
It can work at 10mb instead of 5mb but I have to add a separate modem as the set top box modem is not adequate for the speed upgrade. Is this done by plugging a USB modem into the usb socket on the set top box and the router into the modem or is it some other setup requiring a cable from the wall socket into the modem.
The first seems logical but I thought I would ask.

Any other useful tips would be great please.

Howard
