Currently there is a lot of work going on with the network and TS could be right in that it could be causing your problem. Normally this sort of network work is done over night though. Have you checked the status page on NTL to see if your area was due any network maintenance this weekend? Personally I would call back and ask for a proper explanation as to what is going on and I would ask that the connection be tested if there is no proof of maintenance work in your area.
