Yes, I believe it's because your switch does not give you NAT (Network Address Translation). I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

i think - and I don't usually delve this deep, that switches work using MAC addresses, while routers use TCP/IP, which may or may not be a different way of expressing it, especially when routers usually contain switches
Either way, forget the switch, Dar, a cheap way of sharing internet connection is via Internet Connection Sharing, which needs the 'host' pc to be on for the 'client' to work, or get a router.
